Time for change
The idea of “latest trends” in the fashion and beauty industry can easily become twisted consumerism. If we look at the world and all of our stuff, it’s not hard to see that we’re in a bit of a pickle..
The beauty and fast fashion industry have both been in an extreme growth stage for years now, they’ve reached new heights or I’d probably prefer to say new lows. Beauty is a booming $500 billion per year industry that relies heavily on plastic and is expected to reach approximately USD 863 billion in 2024. While fast fashion is second only to oil as the world’s largest polluter, the industry is responsible for high carbon emissions, wastewater production, and large amounts of landfill waste. The number of garments produced globally exceeded 100 billion for the first time in 2014. Polyester production emitted about 706 billion kg (1.5 trillion pounds) of greenhouse gases in 2015 equivalent of the annual emissions of 185 coal-fired power plants. If the industry doesn’t change, and it’s fashion business as usual, the apparel industry’s climate impact is expected to increase 49% by 2030.
We have now reached a point where it has become an essential part of daily life to discern every single purchase and to educate ourselves about re-using, re-cycling, re-pairing and re-purposing.
